How to use the stand alone!

March 9, 2009

We have got a couple of mails regarding the our stand alone, and how to install it, so I’ll try to guide you through the file structure, and show what you’re able to do once the publication is in place. Please leave a comment if you have any questions or write to info (at) pagegangster.com and I’ll pick it up from there.

Now, to get started it would properly help if you either had your own stand alone zip package or downloaded our example file. When you unzip the file you’ll end up with a folder called STANDALONE containing something like:

The Autorun.inf are for those of you burning the contents of the folder on a CD or DVD. In case you do this the CD should contain these files when you browse it (not a folder called STANDALONE). If you try to open the index.html file in a browser you should actually be able to see the publication. That means that you can just put the contents of the folder on a webserver and visit the index.html in a browser and you’re good to go.

Customizing the viewer

Now that you got the publication viewable you can make changes to it. You can control quite a lot by editing the index.html file. If you open this in a text editor you should be able to see something like:

These settings allows you to control a bunch of things:

  • Setting a background image.
  • Turn buttons on and off
  • Turn stats on and off
  • Disable zoom

So just change all the things you want, save it and revisit the index.html page in your browser. It might be a good idea to keep a original copy of the file if something goes wrong.

Now there are a lot of other things you can do, so I have gathered some links for you:

Stay tuned.. next post – from me anyway – will properly be about getting the most out of Google Analytics.

SP says: What if we're sending an offline publication to someone who has Flash already installed on their computer? Do we need to copy all of those files onto the disc? Is there a way to just keep it to one file? I'm mainly concerned about those who are not as tech savvy. They might get confused by seeing so many files.

Rune says: Thanks Barbara :) SP: Currently you can't wrap it in a single file. I don't think that will be possible at all when you need to view the publication through a webserver.

Jon says: I installed a stand alone FlipBook for a client. The problem is, everytime I try and "SHARE" it I get error: "There was an error sharing this publication. Please try again." I've looked to see if there is some additional configuration that needs to be done but have found no documentation. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

katie t. says: one more thing: i noticed that the video *does* run when i open the index.html file in a browser but not when i run it through Flash. also, the size of the video is very small and the font is pixelated compared to the original flash file. how do i avoid that? thanks. katie

Rune says: lauren: If you want to purchase a single publication, simply upload the PDF and click activate when you view it. You will be taken to our payment flow where you only pay for the single publication. Jon: This can mean a number of things. Write us at suppor@pagegangster.com and will take a look. Katie: Please send a support request on support@pagegangster.com.
