FOREWORD

It is indeed an honour as County President to address all members of Gloucestershire Golf Union prior to the start of 2009 season. My first task as County President gave me great pleasure, to award Honorary Life Membership to David King and Joe Penfold. Unfortunately David lost his fight against leukaemia in October 2008. I would like to point out to the membership the value of the County's web site, quite a number lack awareness as to what the County Union's function is and what it can do for each of them. Tim Clink, the County Captain for the past 4 years, has achieved quite a few notable successes during the 2008 season of which he can be proud of, despite losing Chris Wood to International duties and Chris Lloyd who had to continue his education. Without Chris Wood and Chris Lloyd playing in County matches plus Adam Carson at the latter end of the season, Tim was limited in team selection. Congratulations to all the 1stand 2nd team players and of course Jason Cuff 2nd team Captain. 2009 County Captain Nigel Thompson, I hope, will have 100% support from all Union members to achieve the success he deserves. I am sure Tim will agree Nigel made an excellent Vice Captain, assisting wherever possible to obtain the best results. May I take this opportunity to wish Chris Wood every success in his Professional career. We must also be aware of the work carried out by other members of the Executive – David Hares, Coaching Chairman & Past Captain although still holding down a full time job, puts in a tremendous number of hours, evenings and weekends, to carry out his duties; Peter Stone, Championship Chairman for the past 2 years, another full time worker, who with his team of referees runs the County competitions like a well oiled machine. Mark Powell Junior Representative, also fully employed, ably assisted by Ken Newman Junior President and Don Harmer, their loyalty and dedication, working hard to produce the counties next generation of stars, bearing in mind Chris Wood came through the county junior ranks. Congratulations must go to the County Seniors and Captain Tony Gough for their achievements this year. One notable success, reaching the regional finals played in Kent. The three Members Association Days were well supported – thanks go to Ted Major, Joe Penfold and Brian Carnie. Ted will tender his resignation at the AGM in March. He has worked hard to build a relationship with the members to attract support for the competition and succeeded! I am sure you will join with me wishing him all the best for the future. Brian will be taking over as Membership Organiser for 2009. Our thanks also go to our E.G.U. representatives Ian Foulner and Rob East who find their way to and from Woodhall Spa – E.G.U. Headquarters, to attend meetings on our behalf. Jolyon Gardiner, Hon Treasurer, has the Counties finances and the County close to his heart, the remaining members of the Executive Committee Brian Kingston, Eric Innes, Patrick Murphy, Mike DoyleDavidson, and Richard Chatham, all of whom have worked diligently throughout the year for the good of the County. Thank-you!
