Trustees and association committee meetings Fund’s triennial actuarial valuation up for review The Association’s April committee meeting (see P1) was told that at the RB Pension Fund Trustees’ meeting earlier in the month it had been confirmed that the pensions increase at April 2010 would be 2.4%, but the main item discussed was the Pension Fund’s triennial actuarial valuation as at April 5 this year. Over the next few months the trustees would be reviewing the draft results and discussing these with the company. The financial results of the company had been examined and the strong financial position noted. Regional coordinators’ reports to the committee recorded the continuing problem of finding volunteer visitors Northern region is looking to concentrate on those pensioners who would gain most from a visit (e.g.disabled and those living alone). The Committee thought this was a sensible approach and were supportive of this strategy. Peter Bacon (right) had to give up visiting due to the pressure of other commitments. Southern region reported that Roy Edward and David Head had retired from visiting after many years service. Chairman David Saltmarsh agreed to write to them and thank them for their efforts. Arrangements have been made to cover their areas but visitors are still needed in Harrow, Middlesex and Essex. Get togethers are planned for Derby, Leicester and Plymouth. Eastern region emphasised the importance of its two main visitors, Pam Gulliver and Neville Starling who made 90% of the visits. Get-togethers continued to be well attended with a record number at the last meeting. Pensions Department agreed to look into the issue of informing visitor co-ordinators of pensioner deaths as soon as possible. Chris Eagleton, who has started visiting in Northern Region (see P1) joined J & J Colman from the Esso refinery at Fawley and, after working in engineering and production, became more and more involved with IT. Norwich family link He transferred to Group Management Services in Hull, moved to Export Division, became systems auditor in the internal audit team (an HQ function) and was IT Security Manager for the European Group before taking early retirement after the merger with Benckiser. Chris is married to Kathleen, who worked in the Statistical Department at Norwich. He has a family history with Colmans as his maternal grandfather worked at Carrow for 51 years and his paternal great-grandfather worked at Stoke Holy Cross, which, coincidentally, features on P4 of this issue. A special meeting was held in March at the White Horse, Trowse for Eastern Region members who wished to see a repeat showing of an old film about Colmans, at the time of the original mustard mill, and a more recent one of about 40 years ago. More than 30 were present for this one, with many staying on for lunch and a chat, while this month’s meeting attracted nearly 50. No canary (sex) films this time but, as always, plenty to chat and reminisce about. Hull’s attendance also went up this month with 20 pensioners gathering at the Goodfellowship in Cottingham Road. Talk there was of The Tiger’s (Hull City) exit from the Premiership but the Derby meeting had a happier football memory with this picture, left, of a group who worked at the factory celebrating a £13,257 pools win in 1972.
