Johnie Powelson Griffin and Gary Swaffield Griffin, 1960 Dunton, Charles du Tant, Nicolai Fechin, Fleck, Burt Harwood, E. Martin Hennings, Frank B. Hoffman, Mario Larrinaga, Frieda Lawrence, Loeffler, Rolshoven, Frank P. Sauerwein, J. H. Sharp, M. Thomas, and Young-Hunter. In addition, Loeffler painted the cabinets in Griffin’s home and an American Indian artist (possibly Andrew Tsinajinnie) painted a mural under the portal on the south side of her house. Griffin also traveled to Santa Fe every few weeks, staying at La Fonda Hotel and immersing herself in the Santa Fe social and art scenes. Consequently, she collected works by Santa Fe artists Gerald Cassidy and Randall Davey. Johnie Griffin also collected historic Texas art, including works by Julian Onderdonk, Olive Vandruff, and H. D. Bugbee. She also collected eastern American paintings by George Inness, Thomas Moran, and Ralph A. Blakelock as well as European and American furniture. Chief among the European paintings in the collection are works by Trevor Haddon (British); Jan (Jean Ferdinand) Monchablon (French); Pieter Eduard Stroehling (German); Martin Rico (Spanish); William Lee-Hankey (British); Rafael Romero Barros (Spanish); Marco Bello (Italian); and Ivan Pavlovich Pokitonow (Ukrainian). Griffin also had an extensive collection of textiles, including Mexican Saltillo serapes, Rio Grande blankets and Navajo rugs and blankets. Reflecting Griffin’s interest in Asian objects, the furniture exhibit will also include several pieces of elaborately carved Chinese export furniture as well as a number of Asian ceramics, textiles and ivory carvings. previous page next page
