THE NORTHERN GARDEN COLLECTION Welcome to the 2009 Northern Garden Collection Reference Guide. In the pages that follow you will find plants for every place and purpose. Important plant characteristics such as mature size, foliage/flower colour and cold hardiness are at your fingertips. The Northern Garden Collection consists of more than 800 hardy plant varieties for the prairie region. These plants are produced in south-central Manitoba and their growth is synchronized with prairie weather conditions. You can select and use these plant varieties with confidence. The front cover showcases SEM False Spirea, a recent plant introduction with outstanding landscape features. SEM is a dwarf shrub with bronze-pink, fern-like spring foliage and spikes of white flowers in mid summer. SEM is an exceptional container plant in outdoor spaces and also serves as a durable landscape element in sun or light shade. We are also pleased to introduce Purple Spire® Crabapple (see back cover) a compact, columnar rosybloom with outstanding form and purple foliage. Purple Spire® can serve as a colourful privacy screen or a unique specimen. Starlite® is another hybrid crabapple with glossy green foliage, upright growth habit and excellent resistance to fireblight and apple scab. You will also notice new shrub listings from Proven Winners (see page 2). Limelight, Pinky Winky and Quickfire offer exciting new colour choices among hardy panicle-type Hydrangeas. For the collector, Black Lace Elder and My Monet® Weigela are exciting foliage plants that deserve a place on any patio. Browse these pages and “colour your yard” with the Northern Garden Collection.
