A solid home or school is the basic building block of family and community life anywhere in the world. But in Africa it can be much more. In extremely poor communities where jobs are scarce, it is an opportunity to learn new skills and give people a chance to work their way out of poverty. The launch of Build IT International in 2006 was inspired by this vision. A group of experienced business and Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) people researched the idea in 2005. They included John Parry, OBE, one of the pioneers of the intermediate technology movement. What they saw was a huge need in much of Africa for essential buildings and the potential for a different approach in response - one that creates real skills and jobs. Our approach is straightforward, and it works: • We use simple, more affordable technologies and local materials to make bricks and tiles • We use these materials to build much needed homes and schools • We fully involve the community to make sure we get the project right • We train people to become builders themselves, so they can create more homes and schools, and train others to become builders too Our supporters can feel proud of playing their part in making a lasting impact on the lives of African communities. Their generosity together with the expertise and experience of our team and partner communities in Africa has so far assisted over 1,000 people at four projects. There are more people and communities asking us to help them to change their world. Will you join us in helping them to build a brighter future? Andrew Jowett - Director previous page next page
