N0 TEAM CHANGES – BUT ONE VACANCY There were no new nominations for the committee so that the members seeking re-election were duly returned for a term of three years from January 1, 2010. The committee will then consist of: Audrey Beaulieu; Brian Bradley; Freddie George; Philip Mayor; Kevin O’Berg; David Saltmarsh; Alistair Stewart and Tony Swell, leaving one vacancy. Aerosol packing show a leg At the Derby get-together in the usual venue at the Markeaton Park Orangery it was again old photographs and old company magazines that were the source of much fun and reminiscing. The aerosol packing line’s entry into a Derby parade, pictured left, was a source of much hilarity. They had plenty to laugh about on the day too, as their St.Trinian’s float won a shield, pictured with general manager, the late Ron Minns (see P8). Old copies of the Derby Sight magazine, right and below right, aroused plenty of interest and the day ended with a raffle (you can see the prizes on the table) and everyone left looking forward to next event. Some 45 members enjoyed their time together at Trowse but it was a cosier, but equally convivial, group of 10 in Hull. Eastern Region’s Ken Herbert is still keen to see an improvement in numbers, with so many pensioners living in Norwich and the surrounding area. “I know it’s recently retired pensioners we need to see at our meetings; possibly those who worked elsewhere after the closure but have fortunately retired with a R&C pension.” he told Contact. We went to press a little later in the month with this issue or we would have given him an advance plug for his October meeting which promised to be particularly interesting. He planned to show a Colman’s archive film on canary seed production and the export of total packages of birds, cages and seed to the U.S.A. This halted at the beginning of the war due to U boat operations and was never resumed. But the footabll team is still The Canaries. The secret of sexing the birds will also be revealed. We look forward to reporting that. Meanwhile, Ken tells us, the famous Colman’s wherry, Hathor, has gone in for a major overhaul and is not likely to be seen in the next three years. previous page next page
