Wickliffe Connection State of City Address: April 16 By Mayor Tom Ruffner As your mayor, it is my honor to again host the Annual State of the City Address at the Wickliffe Community/ Senior Center on April 16. This year’s topics include: the City’s budget and services, home foreclosures, a report from the Wickliffe City Schools and a Red Cross presentation on disaster preparedness. Also scheduled is information from our Recreation Department including events and activities in our parks and the Community/Senior Center. The program begins at 7 p.m. and will be video taped for Channel 12 for those that can’t attend the meeting. 2008 was balanced budget year for our City’s finances. 2009 will be a challenging year. With the economy in decline, City Council and I have reviewed the 2009 budget and reduced our expenses as much as possible to minimize the need to take money from our carry-over account. Bill Margalis, Council President and Finance Committee Chairman, will discuss in detail the City’s 2008 results and projections for 2009. City services have been reviewed and, where deemed not absolutely necessary, eliminated. The use of City-owned picnic tables will be delivered only to City-sanctioned functions, not home or business parties. Also, animal traps will be available for pick up and residents responsible for cost to remove animal. Some part-time employees have been cut. Where possible, tasks done by parttime employees have been absorbed into full-time employees’ work load. Streamlining work efficiency is critical Spring 2009 Vol. 25, No. 2 Wickliffe Public Library earns 5 Star rating Thanks to your loyal patronage, Wickliffe Public Library has been ranked as a FIVE STAR LIBRARY by ‘Library Journal’ (the undisputed authority when it comes to America’s Libraries). The Building Department, represented by Building Commissioner Ray Sack, will describe the home foreclosure issue and advise residents regarding how the City is maintaining abandoned, bank-owned properties. Kathleen Cintavey, school superintendent, will give an update on the school system’s building improvements and an overall report on the school system. This past winter, a presentation was made by the American Red Cross on disaster preparation. Due to heavy snow, the first presentation was cancelled and a subsequent meeting was held. At that meeting there was much valuable information that I would like them to share again with a larger audience.
