Getting to the get-togethers After discovering that a lady newcomer to the last Northern Region get-together in Hull had to catch two buses and spend an hour getting there, visitor co-ordinator Phil Mayor suggested a “give a lift” scheme. Over in Eastern Region there should be no shortage of lady pensioners seeking a lift if former mill superintendent Jack Clover continues to roll up in his beautifully restored veteran sports car, left. TRUST TRADES DEPT. TO LIVEN THINGS UP Eastern Region’s January get-together at The White Horse, Trowse saw a record 40-plus attendance for that time of the year. One attraction is that coffee and hot sausage rolls are the treat on arrival at the first meeting of the year. Ken Herbert reports that the action was spearheaded by the band of brothers from technical services (“better known to us real oldies as the Trades Department”) who always liven up the proceedings in the most delightful way. “There was plenty of good chat – especially with Alan there!” said Ken. “An exprinting works lady who had emigrated to Australia and is now living in Norwich joined us and was made very welcome. I hope we will see her again – speculation is rife.” Paul Gilliam, the new Pension Visitor for the High Wycombe area (see P3), is holding a ‘tea party’ on Wednesday, May 18 from 2.30–4.30 pm at the Reggie Goves centre, High Wycombe. All welcome. Details from Paul on 01494 562843, 07799 796289 mobile or gilliamph@aol.com. Such centres have become increasingly popular with pensioners as a daytime meeting place and this one makes a point that its restaurant is wi-fi equipped – but Brian makes a special request to members not to bring their laptops! The Hull get-together on March 1 attracted what Phil Mayor describes as a “modest” turnout of 14 but that plainly did not dampen proceedings judging by this jovial shot, above. The joke was that Phil’s camera battery would, as usual, go flat – it did not. It failed altogether. This was the last decent shot. However it gives us the opoprtunity to remind members that Trevor Clark (left) having been co-opted last year is now the elected secretary of the Association. With him here are Phil Shearsmith and David Wallis. Another chapter As our e-book version of the Reckitt Shoe Care history, right, went live with the last issue of iContact a new chapter was being added to the Meltonian story with the announcement that owners Sara Lee were selling their gloabl shoe care (which also includes Kiwi) to S.C. Johnson. Reckitt Benckiser meanwhile continues on the acquisition trail with a £460m deal that will gladden the hearts of our former Overseas Company members – the purchase of Paras Pharmaceuticals Limited. The company which has a brand new plant employing 700 at Baddi in Northern India is a leader in OTC health and personal care products. online special Page 2 iCONTACT March 2011 previous page next page
