DIARY DATES Get-togethers HULL WELCOMES PENSIONERS FROM AMERICA The last Hull get-together (June 14) was one of the most successful so far with more than 20 pensioners attending, encouraged perhaps by the good weather. The occasion was heightened by a visit from two pensioners from America, Les and Elaine Corby, who were on holiday in the UK. Fellow pensioner Elsie Huggett, who for a time at R & C in Management lives in East Hull and was a colleague Services. of the Corbys, brought them to the After retiring Les and Elaine meeting and colleagues and friends emigrated to America to be near to from the former Group Distribution their son and his family. One of the most regular attenders Geoff Maeer was again absent, due to his wife’s illness, so those present sent both of them their best wishes. The October meeting will be particularly interesting. Ken Herbert said Sid Barlow (see P1) embarked on a fantastic journey of discovery in tracing the life of Ethel Gooch from Colmans of Norwich to Canada and then, nearly 100 years later, to her surviving relatives in the USA. A pensioner made an early morning phone call to ask if he could attend the Octber meeting. Ken, of course, said yes and asked where the caller was coming from. Answer - Australia. NO SHIELDING ONE’S AGE IN THIS CONTEST The five-a-side inter-departmental football cup featuring Trevor Clark in the last issue (No. 51, June) turned up a number of former colleagues with better memories than our former HR director. In addition to Trevor’s best man Alan Black (whom he had not forgotten!) the others since identified were Malcolm Myers, Keith Lawson and Graham Hancock. Tony Reid of Edinburgh, former Dansom Lane librarian and goalie, second left above, reckons his picture of an earlier winning team shows him to be about three years younger than Trevor judging by the number of shields round the edge of the trophy.
