Town Mayor 2008/9 Ted Appleyard
Ted Appleyard is an indefatigable public servant who, at the tender years of 91, still serves as Barton Town Mayor, and serves on North Lincolnshire District Council and the Humber Bridge Board. Long term director of Humberside Airport, he is now an advisor (not surprising since he, with others, netted £4.5M in grants over the years in contribution to this major area communications hub). Dyed in the wool Bartonian, Ted followed his father into service at Halls Barton Ropery (now the Ropewalk) but in 1937, enlisted in the Navy, distinguishing himself as a Commando (he modestly says, in view of his small stature!) blowing up fuel at Tobrook and impeding the enemy as well as escorting 49 vessels into wartime Malta. The latter was of supreme importance, preventing Malta surrendering, but left only 7 vessels to successfully beat the blockade. Not for nothing was he awarded the George Cross, meeting the Queen at her regular GC dinners. Ted was a florist and after following in his mother’s footsteps in the shop at 10, Newport, built his present renowned shop in Bowmandale. In 1960, Ted Appleyard went into politics as an independent member of the Barton UDC and has, been involved in the various degrees as councillor in Barton upon Humber, since. He has been Barton Mayor three times. He was on Glanford Borough Councll from 1974 and Humberside County Council since 1989. When local government was reorganised he became a North Lincolnshire Council member. Ted has always championed the Town he grew up in; “a gem of a town” is his cry. However, his interests abound and Ted has been a member of the Humber Bridge Board for 37 years, urging the plight of cancer sufferers who he campaigns should have free tolls to Hull from Barton. He has also been president of the local St John’s Ambulance brigade for 25 years. Always up to date, Ted insisted that there be praise for the Chamber of Commerce and Town Council members that organised a memorable 2008 Christmas Festival (the lights were specially bright) and praised the work of his Deputy, Coun Keith Vickers who had worked so indefatigably to promote CCTV in Barton, installations shortly to be in place. Ted Appleyard, a gem of a man, was born on Christmas Day 1917, Barton’s arguably most committed citizen.
