The ‘Dobe Walls Fight circa 1910 Ink and gouache on cardboard Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Purchase funded by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Josserand Born in California, Borein began cowboying at 18, working on ranches in California, Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico. After 1900 he free-lanced and was staff artist for newspapers and magazines, including Sunset. Borein went to New York in 1907 to illustrate for Harpers, Colliers Weekly, The Saturday Evening Post, and corporations such as Stetson Hats, Pierce Arrow, and Aunt Jemima Syrup. He also studied etching at the Art Students League. Borein returned for good to Santa Barbara, California in 1919.
