Transcendental Mansions of the Moon Limited Edition of 25 Iris Prints Signed and dated 2008AD/1429AH Image size: 74 x 119 cm The words and letters of the Fatiha, the opening surah of the Qur’an, are interlaced in square Kufic script to encompass the entire stage of this composition. In the sky, a subtle layer of cursive writing repeatedly affirms that ‘to God belong the East and the West; wherever you turn there is God’s countenance; behold, God is infinite, all-knowing’ (Qur’an, 2:115). In rhythmic contrast, the earth is woven of geometric patterns expressing the verse ‘do good deeds lavishly, without stint, and give deep thought to their steady flow’ (Qur’an, 34:11). In the two blocks the cubed shape of the Ka’ba is divided tenfold and inscribed with the names of God in a manner which clarifies the reason for the Prophet’s statement that ‘God has ninety-nine names, one hundred minus one, and whoever enumerates them enters Paradise’. previous page next page
